Remembering 1.12.2010

It was 4:53 p.m. when a 7.0 on the Richter scale earthquake shook Haiti.
316,000 lives were lost.
1,000,000 became homeless.

Such unfathomable loss. Twenty-five seconds on January 12th is a defining moment for Haiti, and for thousands of individuals.

Fifty aftershocks 4.5 magnitude or greater were accounted for in the next twelve days. Thousands upon thousands moved to the streets. Many had lost their homes, and the greater part of them feared the buildings still together wouldn't withstand the aftershocks.

Haiti was flooded with Humanitarian aid through an amazing network of people. Christians residing in Haiti talked about an unusual peace God was giving the people around them. In the midst of all the wailing, there were those praising God for his protection.

From reports of missionaries and others, Haiti seems to have barely started recovery 24 months later, despite more than $2 billion in foreign aid. So many homes were destroyed that temporary tent cities hastily set up throughout Port-A-Prince appear to become permanent with more than 550,000 people still living in the dirty and dangerous "Tent cities" throughout Port-a-Prince.

Missionary friends of ours have shared with us a measure of what an overwhelmingly difficult task serving in Haiti can be. Because they're county is dedicated to Satan, it's a disaster. Basic things like work ethic and desire to rebuild are generally not present. Laziness domains.

I never choose where I would be born--neither did you. I'm stand amazed at the mercy of God in placing me in a nation founded in principles of His Word.

As we recollect 1.12.2010 let's be in prayer for all of the missionaries working over there. I can't imagine being in their shoes...I admire them and the way God is working through them!

And as Christians we're all called to be missionaries! Jesus said: "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." If not on the foreign field, then we should be giving to those who are...fulfilling God's command as we support them in "going into all the world."

There are many great missionary organizations out there you can support. I will not list them all, but I do want to mention a few. Two that are actively involved with work in Haiti are:

&

Pilots serving with Missionary Flights International fly hundreds of missionaries into Haiti. Tons of supplies are delivered in the same way. This organization is a huge asset in missionary work in the West Indies. Visit their website:

My desire is that commemorating 1.12.2010 has reminded you how blessed you are. Even more so, I hope it has reminded you to prayer for and support worthy organizations who are fulfilling God's command and trusting Him to meet their needs.

I encourage you to consider today how you can give to those in need....

"Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD
 thy God which he hath given thee."
{Deuteronomy 16:17}

"But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly."
{Matthew 16:3-4}

A friend of ours went over there sometime after the earthquake to help out some other people who were going on a mission trip there. There was also a missionary we knew, from the church we were going to, he was running an orphanage, I believe, they were caught in the earthquake. The place was damaged, but him, the volunteers, and all the children were safe. The Lord certainly had His hand of protection on them. Thanks for posting this.

We had a crippled girl named Yoldy from Haiti staying with us because she had a really bad eye injury and came to the US to get treatment. When her doctor said that she could go back to Haiti, the earthquake struck. I'm thankful for the Lord's protective hand on her! (She is my age)
